athenahealth’s cloud-based services offered to health care providers in Los Angeles County

WATERTOWN, MA, and LOS ANGELES, CA – May 20, 2011 – athenahealth, Inc. (NASDAQ: ATHN), a leading provider of cloud-based practice management, electronic health records (EHR), and patient communication services to medical groups, today announced that Health Information Technology Extension Center for Los Angeles (HITEC-LA) has selected athenahealth as one of its preferred vendors to offer certified EHRs to solo, small group, and clinic health care providers. Certified by the Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology (ONC), athenahealth’s EHR service is capable of meeting the criteria supporting Stage 1 meaningful use requirements under the Health Information Technology for Economic and Clinical Health (HITECH) Act, and, as a result, allows eligible health care providers to qualify for Medicare and Medicaid incentives.

“athenahealth offers an attractive value proposition with their EHR system for practices that want to outsource their billing functions,” said Mary Franz, Executive Director for HITEC-LA. “Our main focus is helping our members attain meaningful use and improve the quality of care that they can deliver; athenahealth’s system is well suited to assist providers in achieving these outcomes. athenahealth is a great addition to what will soon be a full range of certified EHR vendors that we will offer our members.”

Health care providers who are working with HITEC-LA can purchase athenahealth’s EHR at a discounted rate with special terms and will be guided and supported by both organizations throughout the implementation process.

“One of the reasons physicians across the country have been reluctant to implement an EHR in their practices isn’t the cost, it’s actually the headache of getting one up and running and, more importantly, actually using the product,” said Jonathan Bush, Chairman and CEO of athenahealth. “However, great organizations like HITEC-LA are lending a hand, and we are excited to work with them to showcase the merits of our cloud-based service, athenaClinicals®, and, more importantly, demonstrate how easy it is for physicians to work with us and quickly get on the right path to reimbursement.”

Health Information Technology Regional Extension Centers (RECs) were formed under the HITECH Act, which is part of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009. In addition to developing the RECs, the HITECH Act also created the Medicare and Medicaid EHR Incentive Programs, which provide incentive payments to eligible professionals as they adopt, implement, upgrade, or demonstrate meaningful use of certified EHR technology. Eligible health care providers can receive up to $63,750 under the Medicaid EHR Incentive Program or up to $44,000 under the Medicare EHR Incentive Program.

HITEC-LA was founded in 2010 under the HITECH Act when the federal government awarded L.A. Care Health Plan, the nation’s largest public health plan, a $15.6 million grant to establish the exclusive REC for Los Angeles County. HITEC-LA’s goal is to help a minimum of 3,000 eligible primary care providers achieve meaningful use of a certified EHR under Stage 1 of the HITECH Act by April 2014. HITEC-LA acts solely in the best interest of Los Angeles County health care providers, helping them select the right certified EHR system for their practices and guiding them through the entire implementation process to achieve meaningful use. Subsidized technical assistance is offered to eligible primary care providers at no cost to them; specialists and other health care providers receive those services at substantial discounts.

“The good news for Los Angeles County doctors is that they’ve got a great organization in HITEC-LA to turn to for support, and we look forward to bringing our deep understanding of the benefits that cloud-based EHR services can bring to a host of new physicians, helping them to receive financial reimbursements for embracing the future of health care,” said Bush.

Providers that choose to work with athenahealth through HITEC-LA have the comfort of knowing they are taking the necessary steps to receive financial reimbursement under the HITECH Act due to athenahealth’s guarantee program. athenahealth offers a federal stimulus-bonus-payment guarantee program that assures its web-based services will help doctors across the nation, including those in Los Angeles County, meet EHR certification requirements for achieving meaningful use and obtain the Year 1 program incentives offered by the HITECH Act.
